The people of Christ Church take to heart the Biblical description of hospitality: offering accommodations to strangers in our Home Stay Program. It is just that, a stay in one of our parishioner’s homes. We know we may be “entertaining angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2.) We maintain a small network of homes in which guest rooms are available at a moderate cost to visitors.
Our guests range from prospective Oberlin College students, parents visiting their students, alumni returning for reunions or alumni meetings, and visiting lecturers and other guests to the College and town. They might be from China or Russia or Boston or LA. Some might be Episcopalians, but most are not; we welcome into our homes all who contact us, give them a good breakfast, help them with insights about the town and College, provide directions, restaurant suggestions, and much more, all to make them feel at home. In return, we meet fascinating people, create life-long friends, and demonstrate Christ Church as a caring and loving community. Some of our visitors return again and again, declaring this to be their home away from home.
A mother of a senior college student recently shared she was sad that after her daughter graduates this May, she will no longer be coming to Oberlin to visit her long-time hosts. Is she an angel? Who knows? But definitely a friend, who has exchanged concern about health and parenting over a cup of coffee at a friend’s kitchen table. This is Christ Church hospitality.
